What is the iAd Network?
The iAd Network provides an automated and intuitive environment for you to easily incorporate iAd ads into your applications. You can also monitor performance and track revenue. iPhone Developer Program members can join the iAd Network today.

What happens when I join the iAd Network?

You will be prompted to complete the following:

  • Agree to the iAd Network Contract located within the Contracts, Tax and Banking Information module of iTunes Connect
  • Complete the required tax forms, and if you have not previously done so, set up your banking information to activate your iAd Network Contract
  • Enable iAd Network Advertising for your app within the Manage Your Applications module in iTunes Connect
  • Set up your iAd Network preferences within the iAd Network module in iTunes Connect

Which browsers are supported by the iAd Network portal?

While any modern standards-compliant browser will support the iAd Network module, the following browsers have been validated for optimal performance:

  • Apple Safari v4 or above (Mac, PC)
  • Mozilla Firefox v3.5 or above (Mac, PC, Linux)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer v8 or above (PC)

Do I need to join the iAd network before I download and use the iPhone SDK?

No. You can start developing and testing your application with test ads from the iAd Network without joining.

Do I need to be an iPhone Developer Program member to join the iAd Network?

Yes. You will need to be an iPhone Developer Program member in order to join the iAd Network. If you are not already a member, you can join by visiting the iPhone Developer Program Portal.

If I do not wish to join the iAd Network, can I continue to use my existing ad delivery service?

 Yes.

Can I join the iAd Network and serve iAd advertising for my iOS 3 application?

Ads from the iAd Network can only run on iOS apps built with iOS SDK 4 and target iOS 4 as the minimum OS.

How do I create an iAd rich media ad?

iAd Producer, combined with the power of iOS 4 and its Webkit-based browser, makes it easy for you to create high-impact, motion-rich ads without programming. For advanced developers, iAd Producer provides sophisticated JavaScript editing and debugging tools, as well as an extension mechanism that enables the development of reusable components and page templates. iOS Developer Program Members can download iAd Producer from the iOS Dev Center. If you are a media or design agency and would like to create iAd rich media ads, you will need to join the iOS Developer Program.

I don't see the iAd Network module enabled in my iTunes Connect view. What could be wrong?
You must have two important steps completed in order to see the iAd Network module present on your iTunes Connect homepage view.
1) You need to have accepted the iAd agreement in the Contracts, Tax and Banking Information module in iTunes Connect
2) You need to have enabled at least one of your apps for iAd Network advertising in iTunes Connect

Does the iAd Network allow me to set my own preferences to control the types of ads that get served?

The iAd Network does allow you to exclude ads from competitors or other unwanted advertisers based specific keywords, URLs, and application Apple IDs that you want to exclude.

Can I use the iAd Network to serve ads in my application for my own apps or content (known as “house ads”)?

The iAd Network does not include support for serving house ads using the Network.

What information is used to decide which types of ads run in my app?

In addition to the preferences you set in the iAd Network module, the metadata you supply iTunes Connect will be used by the iAd Network to optimize the types of ads that are served to your application.

If I enable my app to serve iAd ads, can I remove them from my app at a later time?

Once you have enabled iAd ads in your application, you may disable them from your app the next time you submit a binary update through iTunes Connect.

How can I track the effectiveness of using the iAd Network in my applications?

The iAd Network module through iTunes Connect provides an intuitive environment for you to easily monitor performance and track revenue.

How is advertising revenue earned?

Advertising revenue is based on two components: ad impressions (number of times advertisements appear in your app) and clicks (number of times users tap to view the advertisement). The mix of advertisement types shown on your app affects the advertising revenue as well (for example, iAd for Brands and iAd for Developers).

Note that certain activities are not included in your revenue. This includes clicks on ads that do not fully load due to user action and bonus impressions required by our agreements with advertisers.

What is the revenue share for the iAd Network?

Developers receive 70 percent of iAd Network revenue.

When will I receive payment for my iAd revenue?

Advertising revenue is paid in compliance with the terms of your agreement with the iAd Network. Advertising revenue is typically paid using the same schedule as Paid Apps revenue. More information is available in the iTunes Connect Financial Reports module.

Why is my monthly revenue different from iTunes Connect?

Apple reports revenue in the iTunes Connect portal using the Apple fiscal month, which generally does not map to a calendar month. Please make sure you are reviewing your revenue using the same time range and check the iTunes Finance Reporting Guide for more details.

Why is my app displaying an empty banner space?

To ensure that a blank ad space does not run in your live application when a paid ad is not available, please ensure your app handles Ad Banner events properly.

Ad Banner events are described in the iAd Programming Guide. Apple recommends that you move the banner view off screen by changing its frame origin, unless there is an available ad. You may also refer to the live session of the WWDC 2011 Session 505 - iAd Implementation Best Practices.

What is the difference between the Fill Rate and the iAd Fill Rate?

iAd Fill Rate adjusts the number of total ad Requests to reflect only those countries which are supported by the iAd Network.  Those countries include United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Japan.  Fill Rate includes all countries from which a Request originates, even if they are not within the iAd Network.  Requests from countries where the iAd Network is not live cannot be filled.

Please note that you may have ad requests filled in countries in which the iAd Network is not live by services other than iAd.

How do I check my iAd revenue payment against the Revenue metric shown on the iTC Reporting Portal?

In order for the iAd revenue payment to match the Revenue metric shown on the iTC Reporting Portal, you must select the correct start and end reporting dates that match the payment period for your iAd revenue.

Why is iAd Fill Rate not available in country breakdown metrics?

For country metrics, the Fill Rate is the same as iAd Fill Rate because there is no need to adjust Fill Rate by removing Requests from countries where the iAd Network is not live. Therefore, there is no need to provide an extra column for iAd Fill Rate in the country view.

Why is iAd Fill Rate not available in the 1 Day reports when I pick a date prior to March 1st 2012?

Hourly data of all impressions served after 12:00 AM Pacific Standard Time on March 1, 2012 is available in the 1 day report. Please note that iAd Fill Rate by the hour is not available for dates prior to March1, 2012.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for this information, I found it very useful. We have just released our first iAd supported game Frenzied (App Store.com/frenziedfree) and had no idea what to expect in terms of revenue.
We were also a getting bit twitchy as it took 7 days after our app was available for download for Ads to even start showing up.

One useful resource we found was https://iad.apple.com/itcportal

where you can use your normal developer id to log in (just as you would to iTunes connect) and you can see all your iAd metrics.

Thanks
Terry
